Florence, Italy, is largely regarded as the cradle of the Renaissance. And while the city is best known for its artistic contributions to the world, few are aware that it is also the birthplace of soccer. However, the soccer of 15th-century Florence was rather barbaric in nature. They called it calcio storico, and despite the bloodshed it incurs, locals still play it to this day. The Romans originally invented a sport they referred to as harpastum to keep their warriors in shape. Then men in Florence revived the game in 59 B.C. and eventually started calling it calcio, a word meaning “to kick” in Italian. The premise of calcio storico is somewhat similar to modern-day soccer. The men compete on a square-shaped field, running around in an attempt to throw the ball into the designated goals...

In 2002, Korea and Japan were given the chance to host the FIFA World Cup. What was supposed to be a beautiful sporting event that consisted of flying colors from a variety of nations turned into an infamous plot to derail the hopes and dreams of the nations cheated. During the tournament, South Korea defeated giants Italy and Spain through dirty tactics consisting of playing rough football and having advantages from the referees (No cards given, no fouls given, no suspensions, cards and fouls given to the opposing team, goals disallowed for the opposing team, offside calls). Here is my highlight reel of what occurred during those infamous days. Disgrace of a sport. Music: 1. Opening Music: Aegukga - South Korean National Anthem 2. Calcio Storico is something out of a medieval history book. This historic and violent sport has been a tradition in Florence, Italy for over 500 years and everything remains nearly the same as it was when it was first played. It takes place only one week out of the year and I finally got the chance to witness it! There aren't many words to describe exactly what Calcio Storico (historic soccer) is, the best way to understand is to just watch.
